Taking a dog or cat out of Bahrain: official requirements

What Bahrain asks before a dog or cat leaves: the steps and their timing, every destination with how long it takes, and coming back.

In short

Limited official guidance. Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture publishes little for this route. Everything it does say is here, with its wording. Bahrain describes the export health certificate for dogs and cats in a few lines of the ministry's 2024 services guide (in Arabic). It doesn't say how long before departure to apply or how long the certificate is valid. The destination decides what the certificate must say, so ask the Veterinary Quarantine Section early.

The steps

What the authorities in Bahrain ask before your pet leaves, mostly the health certificate and who has to sign or endorse it.

  1. Official stamp

Export health certificate from the Veterinary Quarantine Section

Go in person to the ministry's Veterinary Quarantine Section with your dog or cat and say which country it is going to. Bring the destination country's import permit and your pet's original vaccination booklet. A vet examines your pet and issues the health certificate once satisfied that it is healthy for export. The fee is 5 Bahraini dinars for a personal export.

    Details and the official words

The guide lists the destination's import permit as a required document. If your destination doesn't issue import permits, ask the section what to bring instead.

For a dog; choose Cat above for cats. Grouped by the time for a pet with nothing done yet. “Already vaccinated”: microchipped, with a rabies vaccination still valid. Only the official waiting periods are counted: “No official wait” still means vet visits and paperwork, and appointment times come on top. Hover over a time to see the rule that sets it.

Questions owners ask

What do I need to take my dog or cat out of Bahrain?

On the Bahrain side: export health certificate from the Veterinary Quarantine Section. The destination’s own requirements come on top; the route pages combine both.

Who signs the export paperwork in Bahrain?

Go in person to the ministry's Veterinary Quarantine Section with your dog or cat and say which country it is going to. Bring the destination…

How early should I start when leaving Bahrain?

It depends on where you go. For a dog with nothing done yet, the official waiting periods allow Canada, Costa Rica and Malaysia in no official wait, and Japan in about 7 months. Vet and appointment times come on top.

How this page is made

The explanations are ours, in plain English. Every rule, number and quote about a country comes from a rule file we have checked word for word against the government’s own page, and it changes when that page changes. Rules are summarised, not legal advice: confirm with the authority and your vet before you travel. How we verify · Report a mistake
