Exit guide

Taking a dog or cat out of Brazil

Exit rules verifiedChecked 2026-10-10Authority: Ministério da Agricultura e Pecuária – Vigilância Agropecuária Internacional

The steps the authorities in Brazil require before your pet leaves, mostly the health certificate and who has to sign or endorse it. The destination adds its own requirements on top: pick it below, or make a dated plan.

The steps

  1. Official stamp

    Request the CVI from MAPA

Applies when: you travel to any EU country, United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Japan, Norway, Switzerland or Northern Ireland (UK)

To travel abroad you must ask MAPA for an International Veterinary Certificate (CVI), the document that shows your pet is healthy enough to enter another country. For many destinations the request is made online, on Gov.br, and for several of them only by a vet registered on the platform; the request window depends on the destination (see the timing). Read the destination's 'Manual do Cidadão' on MAPA's page first.

    Details and the official words

For the United States, no physical stamp ('chancela') is needed on the CVI; the request is made only by a vet registered on Gov.br.

Japan: your private vet still has to stamp and sign the vet space on the CVI before the trip.

  2. Official stamp

Book an in-person CVI at a VIGIAGRO unit

Applies when: you do not travel to any EU country, United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Japan, Norway, Switzerland or Northern Ireland (UK)

For destinations that are not on the online list, the CVI is issued in person at a VIGIAGRO unit. MAPA suggests contacting a unit at least 60 days ahead, because appointments must be booked. Use the destination's official requirements (from its authority or embassy) as the basis.

    Details and the official words

Great Britain, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man have an online CVI too (since 2023), but MAPA's page gives no request window for them; ask VIGIAGRO.

“Para a emissão de um CVI presencial, sugerimos contatar uma Unidades Vigiagro com, no mínimo, 60 dias de antecedência, uma vez que os atendimentos estão sujeitos a agendamento prévio.”

Good to know

  • MAPA updates its 'Sair do Brasil' page country by country, and says the rest of the destinations will move to the online system by the end of the year. Check the destination's 'Manual do Cidadão' on that page before you apply: errors or missing documents send the request back and the review time starts again.
  • A pet that is checked in (not with you) and passes through the European Union needs a separate 'CVI de Trânsito' that meets EU requirements, as well as the CVI for the destination. For a pet that travels with its owner and stays in the customs-controlled transit area, no transit CVI is needed. When: Your route passes through another country
  • For Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela the certificate is issued electronically but still needs a physical stamp from MAPA's official vet at a VIGIAGRO unit. When: You travel to Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Mexico or Venezuela
