Exit guide

Taking a dog or cat out of the United Kingdom

Exit rules verifiedChecked 2026-10-08Authority: Animal and Plant Health Agency

The steps the authorities in the United Kingdom require before your pet leaves, mostly the health certificate and who has to sign or endorse it. The destination adds its own requirements on top: pick it below, or make a dated plan.

The steps

  1. Paperwork

Animal health certificate (AHC) from an official vet

Applies when: you travel to any EU country

Get an animal health certificate signed by an official veterinarian (OV) for each trip. It's valid for 10 days for entry into the EU, then 6 months for onward EU travel and for re-entry to Great Britain.

    Details and the official words

“The certificate is valid for travel any time within 10 days after it’s issued by your vet, so you’ll need to travel during this time.”

  2. Paperwork

Export health certificate (EHC) + export application (EXA)

Applies when: you do not travel to any EU country or Northern Ireland (UK)

For a non-EU destination you need the destination's export health certificate (EHC) and an export application form (EXA). Nominate an official vet, who receives the EHC and checks your pet before travel.

    Details and the official words

“If you’re travelling to a non-EU country, you’ll need to get an export health certificate (EHC).”

Good to know

  • If you live in England, Scotland or Wales you cannot use a pet passport to enter the EU — even one issued in the EU. Use an animal health certificate. When: You travel to any EU country
