Pet travel route
Taking a dog or cat from Micronesia → New Zealand
What the official rules ask for on this route, for a family pet travelling with its owner. Enter your travel date and your pet’s details to turn it into a dated checklist.
Limited official guidance. The authority for entering New Zealand publishes little for this route. Everything it does say is here, with its wording. This follows the 2026 Import Health Standard (in force from 1 July 2026). It sends many details to MPI's separate list of approved vaccines, tests and treatments, which we don't reproduce: your vet needs it. Pets coming from Australia are not covered yet. Until 1 April 2027 the 2021 standard can still be used instead, which we have not read.
How early to start
about 6 months
if your pet has no microchip or rabies vaccination yet (the least time the official waiting periods allow)
about 6 months
if it is already microchipped and vaccinated
Counted only from the officially fixed waiting periods. Vet, lab and paperwork appointment times are on top, so start earlier.
Which rules apply to you
Micronesia is in the group “Category 2: countries recognised as rabies free” in New Zealand’s published list.See every group

What your dog needs
Dogs
We haven’t verified the leaving side for Micronesia yet: its official veterinary authority usually has to issue or endorse the health certificate.
Identification
Permanent microchip
Your cat or dog must be permanently and uniquely identified with a microchip. ISO 11784 or ISO 11785 Annex A chips are recommended, and a vet must scan and record the number at every test, vaccination and treatment.
Details and the official words
“The cat or dog must be permanently and uniquely identified with a microchip.”
“The microchip identification of each cat or dog must be verified and recorded by a veterinarian at each required examination, test, vaccination, and/or treatment performed for import into New Zealand.”
Check
Pre-export identification check by an official vet
An official vet in the country of export scans and verifies your pet's microchip at least 6 months before shipment (for a pet under 6 months old, before any test, vaccination or treatment). The exporting country's veterinary authority must tell MPI directly that the check was done.
Details and the official words
“A cat or dog must have its microchip scanned and verified by an official veterinarian in the country of export at least 6 months prior to shipment; or”
“The competent authority of the exporting country must communicate directly to MPI that the pre-export identification check has been performed by an official veterinarian.”
Quarantine
Book a quarantine place in New Zealand (at least 10 days)
After arrival your pet goes straight to the quarantine (transitional) facility named on the import permit and stays at least 10 days, with a vet inspection within 72 hours of arrival and again at the end. You get a signed quarantine booking form from the facility and include it in the permit application. The stay can be longer, for example if parasites are found.
Details and the official words
“The cat or dog must remain in quarantine for a minimum period of 10 days; and”
“A signed quarantine booking form must be included as part of the import permit application.”
Permit
MPI import permit (apply online)
Apply online for the MPI import permit at least 8 weeks before you need it, and allow 30 working days for processing once MPI has every document. For Category 3 you upload the rabies vaccination records, the blood test result, the Category 3 Rabies Certification Form and the signed quarantine booking form; for Category 2, the signed quarantine booking form.
Details and the official words
“A cat or dog from a category 2 or 3 country (including assistance dogs); and”

Good to know
- We have not verified the export process for FM yet. Your country's official veterinary authority usually has to issue or endorse the health certificate.
- The 2026 standard came into force on 1 July 2026. Until 1 April 2027 you may instead comply with the older 2021 standard, which we haven't read. Ask the exporting country's veterinary authority or your pet transport company which one it works to. From 1 April 2027 only the 2026 standard applies.
- Your pet must fly as manifested cargo (not in the cabin) and can only arrive at Auckland or Christchurch airport. From a Category 2 country the crate must be sealed with a government-approved seal.
- A cat or dog must not be more than 42 days pregnant on the date of shipment.
- Banned in New Zealand: Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario and American Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs (any dog that belongs wholly or predominantly to them).
- Bengal cats can be imported. Other hybrid cats and dogs are likely to be treated as 'new organisms' and need approval from the Environmental Protection Authority before they come.
- From a Category 2 country there is no rabies vaccination or blood test: the country itself must be free of rabies. Your pet must have lived there since birth, or for at least 6 months before shipment.
