Exit guide

Taking a dog or cat out of France

Exit rules verifiedLimited official guidanceChecked 2026-10-10Authority: Service-Public.gouv.fr

The steps the authorities in France require before your pet leaves, mostly the health certificate and who has to sign or endorse it. The destination adds its own requirements on top: pick it below, or make a dated plan.

Limited official guidance. Service-Public.gouv.fr publishes little for this route. Everything it does say is here, with its wording. France's public-service page for trips outside Europe says only that your pet must be identified and vaccinated and that you should ask the destination's embassy. It does not describe the veterinary certificate or the official stamp, and the agriculture ministry's pages that do could not be read by our checks. Ask your DDPP (the departmental population-protection office) which certificate and stamp your destination needs.

The steps

    Good to know

    • To travel outside Europe with your pet, make sure it is identified and vaccinated. When: You do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
    • Ask the embassy in France of the destination country about the entry conditions that apply to your pet. In some countries you must fill in a form on arrival or shortly after. When: You do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
    • Planning to bring your pet back to the EU? After a short stay in a non-EU country you can skip the 3-month wait after the rabies blood test, but only if, before you leave the EU, your pet was vaccinated against rabies, passed a successful titer test, and your vet recorded both in its EU pet passport. So do the blood test before you go.When: You do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
