Rabies vaccination for pet travel: what it is and who requires it
Valid, in-date, and given in the right order. What a rabies vaccination is, why authorities require it, and the exact requirement in every country we cover, quoted from the official source.
Updated 2026-10-12
Rabies vaccination is the backbone of pet travel: almost every destination asks for it, and several other rules (the blood test, the waiting periods, the entry date) are counted from it.
What counts as a valid vaccination differs: the minimum age of the pet, the vaccine type, a waiting period after the first (primary) vaccination, and how long the vaccination stays valid. Always check the destination’s own rule rather than the vaccine’s booklet.
What to watch for
- Many countries only accept the first vaccination after a waiting period (21 days in the UK, the EU, Switzerland and Brazil). A pet that is up to date with boosters usually has no new waiting period.
- A booster must be given before the previous vaccination expires. If cover lapses, the next shot is treated as a first one and the waiting period (and sometimes the blood test) starts again.
- The first vaccination is usually only valid if the pet was at least 12 weeks old; the UK, the EU, Singapore and the UAE all say so.
- Some destinations (Saudi Arabia, for one) want a minimum amount of validity left when the pet arrives.
Who requires it, and exactly how
