Exit guide
Taking a dog or cat out of Spain
The steps the authorities in Spain require before your pet leaves, mostly the health certificate and who has to sign or endorse it. The destination adds its own requirements on top: pick it below, or make a dated plan.
Limited official guidance. Ministry of Agriculture publishes little for this route. Everything it does say is here, with its wording. MAPA's page gives no deadline, fee or office for the export certificate: your vet applies for it through the CEXGAN system, and the destination's own rules decide the rest.
The steps
Official stamp
Export certificate requested by your vet through CEXGAN
Applies when: you do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
To get your pet's export certificate, your vet has to request it through MAPA's CEXGAN application. The EU pet passport alone is not enough to leave the EU.
Details and the official words
MAPA's page gives no deadline for how recent the certificate must be: the destination's own requirements decide.
“Para obtener el certificado de exportación de su mascota, su veterinario deberá solicitarlo a través de la aplicación CEXGAN”
Good to know
- To travel to a non-EU country your pet must meet that country's requirements. Ask its embassy or consulate, and check the companion-animal export section of the CEXGAN system, which publishes information notes by country. When: You do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
- To come back from a non-EU country that needs the rabies antibody test, the 90-day wait after the blood sample does not apply if the test was done with a favourable result before your pet left the EU and is recorded in its passport. When: You do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
- Planning to bring your pet back to the EU? After a short stay in a non-EU country you can skip the 3-month wait after the rabies blood test, but only if, before you leave the EU, your pet was vaccinated against rabies, passed a successful titer test, and your vet recorded both in its EU pet passport. So do the blood test before you go.When: You do not travel to any EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City
